Molly of Denali Is Everything

Molly of Denali on Pbskids and pbskids.org is a new show about a Indigenous girl named Molly and her family.

Here is my latest article about the new show on PBS kids Molly of Denali. https://geeks.media/molly-of-denali-is-everything

I since writing and publishing this article more episodes have been released on the pbskids.org page for folks to watch. If you haven’t had a chance to watch it check it out there. Also on the Molly of Denali page on the PBS kids website are games, printable worksheets and a link to the Molly of Denali podcast.

Molly and her Grandpa in the episode”Grandpa’s drum”

With each episode kids learn a little more about Molly and her family and their life in Alaska. One of the things that I most enjoy is how they incorporate Indigenous language into each episode. Growing up I only heard my elders speak our languages, hearing our words from a kids show has been amazing.

Another thing that we have enjoyed is that Molly’s family reminds us of our own family members and friends. My daughter likes the episodes that talk teach about the animals that live in Alaska. So far we have learned about moose and how to remove one from a runway, we learned that baby puffins are called pufflings ( that was her favourite).

We are looking forward to more episodes of Molly of Denali and looking forward to other studios and content creators to follow this shows example and create even more amazing characters.

Lastly I’m working currently working on my lists articles for SDCC 2019, I will be covering animation, tv and movie announcements. I’m also trying to get my current ranking of Democratic Presidential candidates done before the debate at the end of the month. Then I will write my reaction to the Debate the day after.

Disney Princesses and Fandom Backlash

On July 3rd Disney announced that Halle Bailey will be playing Princess Ariel in the upcoming remake of 1989 animated film “The Little Mermaid.” When the news broke there was backlash for the white fanbase. They came out with every possible excuse to hate on Halle Bailey. Some even tried using science to justify their hate and anger.

I grew up on traditional Mermaid stories from my Grandmother. The indigenous Nations of the Pacific Northwest we have our own Mermaid tales. Mermaid stories traditionally exist all over the world. So thinking that Mermaids are purely a European concept is incorrect. But that’s not even the worst of the flawed thinking regarding this issue.

As a result, I wrote a detailed article about this topic https://geeks.media/why-your-reasons-to-dislike-halle-bailey-are-ridiculous

One thing I would have liked to have expanded on in the article is the positive impact that casting Brandy as Cinderella had in the 90s. I’m 100% certain that if social media existed back in the 90s, her casting and the casting of the rest of the cast would have been met with similar racist backlash. But more importantly, is the positive impact that Brandy had on young Black and Brown girls. Seeing her Sing “Impossible” with Whitney Houston as her fairy godmother gave us someone we could see ourselves in, we could see ourselves as a magical wonderful person who is worthy of miracles and magical adventures. Halle Bailey is going to be that inspiration for a whole new group of young people. That is a marvelous thing that should be celebrated. The good news is that for every hateful person out there being awful, there are people showing love and support to Halle Bailey right now.

I will be writing more about diverse representation in Family and youth media. As a parent I watch a lot of children’s programming, Some of it is really good in the way of having diverse characters and there are still area’s that need a lot of work. One being Indigenous representation. Sunday morning Disney released the first trailer for their live-action “Mulan” film I will be going a separate post of that later.

Indigenous People’s Day 2019

Getting rid of Holidays and monuments that celebrate and honor people like Columbus is just the bare minimum of the work that needs to be done. Acknowledging Indigenous People during Indigenous people’s day or by reciting a well-written land acknowledgment is just the beginning, even though these things have been won through hard work and organizing it’s not the end.

Today we are focused on the deeds of one man and his legacy, while the primary focus of his horrendous deeds is the “America’s” however his impact was global.  He impacted the lives of Indigenous people’s globally, Genocide and Slavery were his products and Europeans enjoyed them. He helped set up the systems that would determine how valuable Black and Brown bodies were to the world. He helped lay the foundations of how people would see the land that we are on and the resources it holds.

Today marks the start of a holiday season that celebrates and honors genocide. Each holiday bringing its own myths of some horrible settler or group of settlers( The Thanksgivings,) While more people are aware that Columbus and others like him were horrible people, what they don’t seem to grasp are a few things…

One: That genocide, slavery and the mistreatment of Black and Brown bodies is ongoing and never stopped. It just evolved, capitalism changed so did how our people are exploited and harmed. Right now on Indigenous lands, we have cages with Indigenous people being held, We have old forts that use to hold Indigenous people’s during the 1800s are now holding Indigenous children. We still have Indigenous children being removed from their families and placed with non-Indigenous ones. We have Indigenous people being killed at a border that was made to split apart and divide our people’s.  We have a prison system that lives off the lives of Black and Indigenous bodies to makes profits. Our Women and Two-Spirit/LGBTQ community members are still being hunted. Every day a name is added to the list of MMIWG and Two-Spirit. The violence that Indigenous and Black women and Queer community members face is a product of the violence that Columbus brought with him. Sexism, Homophobia, Transphobia are all settler colonial ideas. Columbus knew that dehumanizing the most scared, the most important people to the community would help break the community.

We have Indigenous relatives in Brazil fighting against a fascist who wants their land and wants to wipe out the Indigenous people of the Amazon. We have relatives in Equador shutting down their government with a general strike. We have relatives fighting against pipelines that treated our waters and lands.  We have relatives in Hawaii fighting to protect their sacred Mauna from desecration.

Every day we are fighting these systems that were not created by us. They were brought here, an invasive system that continues to harm everything it touches. 557 years of this system and it has done so much harm that it’s hard to measure, it’s seen in the scars that our communities bare and the continued war we are still fighting every day.

Two: That even though Columbus and those that followed tried their best to destroy us then, and they created this system to destroy us now, they haven’t won. Today bask in the light of our accomplishments, our victories. Be proud that you are the product of resistance. That in order for you to be here today your family line had to survive 557 years of genocidal tactics aimed to destroy you. Your ancestors while they were being killed and sold by Conquistadors, Pioneers, Pilgrims, United States Army, bounty hunters, scalpers, slavers, presidents, the church, and everyone else that didn’t see our value as human beings, our ancestors were out there praying and fighting. You have them within you. Every time we reject settler colonial standards of how we should look, think and act we are honoring them. Every time we learn a new word in our language we are healing, Every time we go to our sacred places we are honoring them. When we stand in solidarity with one another as Indigenous peoples we are honoring them, and we fight against the oppression of others we are honoring them.

Also, It’s okay to demand more, then just a name change to a holiday, it’s okay not to be settled with or happy with bare minimum justice.  We don’t have to sit back and be happy with acknowledgment when we should have been acknowledged this whole time. It’s okay to ask for our lands back, it’s okay for us to want more than just performative acts of reconciliation.

And lastly, We have the power to stop others from becoming the Columbus of the future. That we do not allow monsters that commit horrible acts of violence to magically be redeemed and their stories rewritten and turn them into heroes.  We have to ability to hold leaders accountable for the actions and crimes. We do not have to forgive them, nor forget what they have done. The harm they have cause matters, the trauma they have inflicted should be remembered. No more monuments to people like Columbus.

Happy Indigenous People’s Day.

Indigenous News

I’ve busy working on a long news piece about everything happening to Indigenous peoples, instead of Writing an article for each one. This three part series of articles around the many issues that Indigenous peoples are currently fighting against. The reason decided to write three long articles about everything going on was to show that One: We have a lot going on as Indigenous people globally. Two: That Indigenous issues affect everyone and lastly: I’m going to highlight all the positive things happening in our communities.

Things that I wanted to cover in the this article but didn’t

Back home in Washington there was a 4.5 million gallon untreated sewage water spilled into the Salish Sea (Puget Sound) and closed many beaches. The spill came from the West Point Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Renton Wastewater Treatment Plant, which is in Renton, WA. The spill closed This is an example of something horrible that has happened to the land and water that affects my people people, my community directly. However when stories like this happen it’s not until days sometimes week later that we find out how our people were affected.

Issues like this that affect Indigenous communities go under reported, by mainstream media. And when it is covered it’s because Indigenous people have work hard to get the coverage or have reported on our issues ourselves.

I will be writing more about the topics that affect Indigenous peoples, from settler colonial violence to representation in the media.I will be taking the time to write about what’s important to my community.

Welcome to my new Blog

Welcome everyone to my new blog, In the coming days, weeks and months I’m hoping to build up this blog into something special. For a while now I have been working as a ghostwriter, writing for various online news publications. I love ghostwriting for the most part, but now I would like to write for myself and build my own audience. The hardest part about creating this blog is choosing what the blog “focus” was going to be about. I am not a signal issue type of person, I enjoy exploring and discussing the topics that impact my family, community and myself. From politics to entertainment I will be creating media around topics that matter to me.

Welcome to My Blog

Please mind the mess as I figure out this platform and how to get this thing going. *Internal screaming*

Welcome to my new Blog. It’s looking a little rough right now but I hoping in the next few days to fix it up and make it look nice. I’ve had other blogs on other platforms, but this one is taking some getting use to. But I’m hoping once I get things up and running everyone will enjoy my writing here. So let me introduce you to who I am and what I will be covering on this blog.

Who am I?

  • I am a 32 year old stay at home mom , Grad student and freelance writer. I enjoy writing about topics and issues that I either find interesting or impact the world we live in.
  • I am multiracial Native American,Black and White. I was raided my Black and Native mother and my Native grandmother. I’m also Genderfluid/ Two-Spirit and Bisexual. My pronouns are They/Them/Theirs most days but sometimes She/Her.
  • I am a Leftist I have studied Marxism and Leninism. While I apply the their political science of dialectical materialism to my political work and understanding, I do not adhere or draw from Marx and Lenin alone. I also study the works of other Black, Indigenous and Queer activist and political thinkers.

In the coming weeks, I will be working out a schedule of the types of posts I will during the week. Since this is going to be a multi focus blog covering a variety of topics there will be days were I will talk about something currently happening in the news, and not do another blog post and there will be days where I do multiple post a day with articles to go along with the post.

Here are some of the subjects I will be writing about here on this blog:

  • Politics: ( This topic will be one that will cover pretty much everything, even entertainment if I feel like something political needs to be addressed. But Politics can be anything from the 2020 presidential race to white fan being mad at the casting of black girl as Ariel in the upcoming Little Mermaid movie. That’s a lot of stuff to cover don’t be surprised if I talk about Immigration policies one day and then the next day talk about the environment. Again I’m not a “one topic” or “one issue” type of person.
  • Parenting: I am a parent to a old year old. And sometimes I will write about our adventures or my feelings of being a stay at home working parent.
  • Entertainment: Sometimes this topic will intersect with other topics, but for the most part it will be reviews, lists and thoughts about media. Movies, tv, books, art and music will be talked about. I’m a huge nerd/ geek
  • Food: I love food and I love talking about culture and food… pretty much everything about food. Might share some cooking that I do with my kid stuff like that.
  • Random stuff: I might just post random stuff some days like short stories and poems.
  • Academic research : I will be turning my research into articles. But this will be a less frequent most likely once a month.

Well that’s it. This is who I am and this what This blog will be about. If I can make this work I hope that I can make this expand into something more within the next few months. In the coming months I am going to be looking into also creating a podcast and youtube channel .
